Privacy policy

Short version: this site runs no advertising, sells nothing about you, and collects nothing identifying unless you deliberately hand it over by buying the book. It does use Google Analytics to count visits, which sets cookies — the detail is immediately below, including how to opt out.

That is a deliberate choice rather than an accident. People read this site about a private health problem, frequently in the middle of the night, and the last thing that should follow them around the internet afterwards is an advertising profile built on it.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-C9EEYSST4K) to understand how many people reach which pages, and from where. I use it to decide what to write next — nothing more.

It collects, in aggregate:

  • Pages viewed, and how long was spent on them.
  • The referring site or search engine that brought you here.
  • Approximate location (country/region level), device type, and browser.
  • A randomly generated identifier used to recognise a returning browser.

To do this, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies on your device — typically named _ga and _ga_C9EEYSST4K — which persist for up to two years. Google acts as a data processor, and data may be processed on servers outside your country, including in the United States. IP addresses are truncated by Google Analytics 4 and are not stored in their raw form.

I do not run advertising, I have not enabled Google Signals or ad personalisation, and I do not link analytics data to anything that identifies you personally — not your email address, and not your purchase.

How to opt out

Any one of these stops it completely:

  • Install Google's official Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • Turn on your browser's tracking protection, or use its private/incognito mode. Firefox, Safari and Brave block this by default.
  • Use any standard content blocker — they all block Google Analytics.
  • Send a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, which I honour.

Analytics is not loaded at all during local development, and blocking it has no effect whatsoever on how this site works. Nothing here depends on it.

Buying the book

Purchases are processed entirely by Gumroad, which acts as the merchant of record. Payment details are handled by Gumroad and never touch this site or reach me. I receive the information Gumroad passes on to sellers — typically an email address and order details — which I use only to fulfil and support your order. Gumroad's own privacy policy governs their processing.

Hosting and logs

This is a static site. The host may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and operational purposes, on their own retention schedule.

What is stored in your browser

Two things. The Google Analytics cookies described above — and your light or dark theme preference, saved in localStorage so the page does not flash the wrong colours on your next visit. The theme preference never leaves your device and is not readable by me. Clearing your site data removes both.

Your rights

If you are in the UK, EU, or another jurisdiction with equivalent protections, you have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data held about you, and to withdraw consent at any time. Email hello@proctalgiafugax.co and I will action it.

Children

This site is not directed at children.

Changes

Any material change to this policy will be reflected in the last-updated date above.
